APPEARANCE:
Romulus's coat color comes from the Friesian blood of his father. He is one of few horses who can call himself a True Black. His entire coat save for a small white snip on his nose is black. His skin is also black, which is what marks him as a True Black horse. The hair of his mane and tail is wavy and most of the time unkempt. His hair is very kinky, and can be hard to keep in line. Especially for a horse who is always moving and getting it caught in one thing or the other.
Romulus has a very muscular body, something also inherited from his father. He did not get the "thinner" sleeker look of his mother's breeds, but instead got the bulky look of his father's breed. Romulus has always been proud of his muscular body, and has always liked the feeling of being able to overpower another horse if the need calls for it. Of course, with being large comes a bit of a weakness. Romulus is nowhere near as quick as smaller breeds, and has been bested more than once by a stallion much less muscular and smaller than him.
Romulus has what most would consider to be a handsome face. Being young has its advantages, as he hasn't had the chance to become scarred like so many other stallions. His face is sleek and chiseled, and he hopes to keep it that way. Some might say that he puts too much value in his appearance. Resting on the tip of his nose is a small white snip. It is the only part of his body that isn't black. And of course, jutting from his forehead is your typical unicorn horn. It is off-white in color and is about one foot and 9 inches long, making it slightly shorter than the average horn. It sharpens into a vicious point, that has been stained with blood several times throughout his life.

HISTORY:
Romulus has a very typical history. His mother was a loner for most of her life, she didn't thrive off of interactions with other horses, she didn't need them. She had been let down, hurt, and betrayed one too many times. She left her herd at the tender age of three, innocent and hurting. She knew how cruel the world could be, as she watched her mother slaughtered at the hooves of the very stallion who was supposed to protect them. She had ran, and in doing so, left behind everything she held dear. Being a young mare, she'd never even had her first heat before leaving the herd. She knew nothing of what some stallions were capable of, she didn't understand what she was feeling. Its no surprise that she was taken advantage of by a wandering stallion. From this union, her first foal was born. A filly whom she named Thalia. Though she was young and a first time mother, Calypso knew better than to trust anyone around her foal. She and Thalia remained hidden, avoiding other horses as much as possible.
It was two years before they would have an encounter with Adrastus, Romulus's father. It was an accidental meet up, both parties trying to avoid meeting up with other horses. Calypso was immediately suspicious of the large black brute, and placed herself in between him and Thalia. Thalia, though, was enamored with him. From the moment she saw him, she was in love with him. He calmed Calypso down, and eventually the three began traveling together. Both Adrastus and Calypso had been out of the company of the opposite sex for a long time, so as they grew closer, Calypso's belly began to grow as well.
Thalia, who had never given up hope of wooing Adrastus, was devastated. She was beside herself with grief and remorse, and couldn't even fake a smile when her mother told her the "happy" news. That night, Thalia left the mother who had protected her since her birth. Calypso couldn't understand why her daughter was so upset. Was she jealous? But wasn't she a little too old to be jealous of a younger sibling? Adrastus calmed his mate, assuring her that Thalia would be back when she dealt with whatever was bothering her. She just needed space. Adrastus and Calypso stayed more or less in the same area until Romulus was born. Romulus was a large, healthy colt with no problems what-so-ever. He enjoyed his first year of life, with loving parents. He was safe, and his parents gave him everything he could possibly need.
But life can't be all joy and smiles, things can't always go off without a hitch. You see, Thalia never really left her family. She stayed close to them, always watching, driven insane by the happy picture that she was left out of. Romulus should be her colt, she was old enough now. Adrastus should be her mate, her mother just needed to be out of the picture. Under the cover of night as the small family slept, Thalia made her move. She attacked her mother from behind, aiming to kill her. Unfortunately for Thalia, Calypso was much more experienced in the art of fighting. She turned around and ran her horn, unknowingly, through her own daughter's heart. The whole family stood in shock as Thalia slid to the ground, dead. Her eyes were wide with shock and despair, and Calypso screamed in agony.
Things changed after that. Calypso never smiled, she never played with Romulus. She was never affectionate with her mate. She was just a shell. Adrastus stood resolutely by his love's side, determined to bring her back from what she had become. Romulus, however, was simply confused and bitter. It wasn't his fault that Thalia had been killed, why was he having to pay for it? Neither of his parents showed him the same amount of love they had before, and the family began to drift apart.
By the time he was three years old, Romulus had had enough. He was tired of living in the shadows, tired of only having contact with his parents, tired of watching his mother wither away into nothing. He told them he was leaving, that he wanted to join -maybe even lead- a herd. Adrastus understood, he wished his son the best and nuzzled him affectionately. Calypso stared at her only child as if she hadn't heard what he said. Pain shot through the young stallion's heart, but he choked it down. He nuzzled his mother, and turned around. He began galloping in a direction he'd never been before, and didn't look back.
